Protein Controls Our Hunger Hormones
Eating protein with your breakfast, such as eggs and yoghurt, will trigger a hormonal response that helps keep your hunger controlled. Carbohydrates tend to spike our hunger hormones and blood glucose levels, while protein causes a more stable spike in our hormone and blood sugar levels, which keeps our hunger at bay during the day.
Protein Will Keep You Fuller, Longer
As just mentioned, protein controls our appetite hormones. But like fibre, it also encourages a greater feeling of fullness. More so than carbs and fats.
It’s Good for Your Bone Health
As we age, we are at an increased risk of bone deterioration. We all know osteperosis is extremely common, and we need calcium in our diets to help fight it. But we need to be able to absorb the calcium to get the benefits, and protein is vital for calcium absorption and therefore bone formation.
Protein Protects Us From Stress
We all get stressed! We feel it mentally, but physically our bodies go through changes too when we are stressed. Oxidative damage (an imbalance between free radical production and our bodies ability to detoxify the harmful effects) occurs when we are stressed causing an inability to contain hormone imbalances. Consuming enough protein helps buffer against this damage.
