Overweight Kids – Who’s at Fault?
According to the World Health Organization (WHO), childhood obesity has become one of the most serious health threats. There are now nearly two times as many overweight children and three times as many obese, compared to in the 1980’s.
But who’s to blame?
It’s so easy to point fingers at, parents, teachers, media, government, fast food…But the fact is it’s just not that simple.
Though there is a push for getting our kids into more activities, physical education is disappearing from our schools. The canteens fridges are full of soft drink. Supersized options are everywhere and It’s not the kid’s fault that fast food consumption is now out of control? Our parks are being replaced with concrete buildings. These are all adult-made decisions which are resulting in our kids being overweight.
Children learn from watching all adults not only their parents and teachers. We as a society need to take responsibility for all our children, regardless if you have children or not.
If children do not exercise enough or eat a well balanced diet from a young age, it may have detrimental effects on our health, later in life. Habits are usually created when we are kids, and if kids overeat, have excess fat and sugar or watch more TV than they exercise then those bad habits are likely to persist into adulthood.
Let’s stop pointing the finger and start showing the next generation how to live a healthy life. It is the responsibility of all us adults whether they are your child or not!
