Here at The Yummy Mummy Club, we do not believe in fad diets or crash dieting. Rather we believe in following a healthy and balanced lifestyle which includes healthy eating habits. We do not think that you always have to restrict your when you want to lose weight. Intermittent fasting is not a diet; rather a modification to your eating pattern where you still eat your recommended calorie intake, you just eat it in a smaller period of time. Keep reading for some of our favourite intermittent fasting benefits.
Benefits of intermittent fasting:
1. Calorie in vs calorie out is a simple way to explain how weight loss works. Calorie restriction does lead to weight loss, but when it comes to fad diets calorie restriction is usually done in extreme ways making it unachievable in the long term. However when we fast we have less of conscious focus on calorie cutting and there is actually no calorie counting needed. When fasting, it is easier to restrict our total caloric intake as we are rather focused on time frames of when we can eat as opposed to cutting out foods we can’t eat.
2. Intermittent fasting can improve our hormone balance. Intermittent fasting improves our insulin sensitivity, as well as our growth hormone secretion. Both which are needed for our overall health; specifically muscle building and weight loss.
3. Can help us understand hunger. Most of us confuse feeling of hunger with thirst. We also tend to think we are hungry when rather we just tired. It is important to be able to understand feeling of hunger as it can have many benefits; such as weight loss and weight maintenance benefits. Fasting gives us the opportunity to experience hunger pains that we usually misinterpret and respond to inappropriately.
4. Helps create routine. Most of us have a weekly gym routine or daily morning routine that we have created ourselves to help reach our goals. Most of us however do not have an eating or diet routine, which could be part of the reason most of us struggle with a healthy and well balanced diet. Intermittent fasting allows us to haves strict eating times followed by strict periods of fasting, giving us a more solid routine. Although it will be difficult to create and follow this eating routine at the start, within about two weeks or so you will start to notice all the ways a set eating routine can benefit your health.
To conclude, it is fair to say that intermittent fasting offers many health benefits. However please consider that intermittent fasting, like any eating plan needs to be well-balanced that fits into your lifestyle and goals. One of the main struggles faced with intermittent is making it fit into personal lifestyle. You work hours and schedules, your gym routine and family commitments are all factors that need to be considered. Creating your fasting phase is just one component of the intermittent fasting, eating a healthier and balanced diet needs to be considered, as well as exercise.
